Advice Needed: Painting Butcher Block for a Desk

0
Asked By u7vHv4GmkS On

I'm considering using butcher block for my desk setup, but I want to paint it white instead of keeping the natural wood finish. I'm planning to use primer followed by Beyond Paint in my color of choice. Does anyone have tips or experiences with painting butcher block? I know it's not common, but I'm confident it can be done. Any suggestions for the best type of paint would be greatly appreciated!

I actually used an IKEA countertop and just attached some legs for my desk setup, and it worked really well! If you prime and paint it, you should be good to go. You might also want a desk mat to protect the paint over time—there are great options on Amazon.

Why not use a semi-transparent white stain to keep some of that wood grain while changing the color? Just add an epoxy clear coat on top. Sanding and giving it a bit of wear in spots could also look nice before sealing it!

I understand the appeal of painted surfaces, but I have a walnut butcher block desk, and I wouldn't paint it. The prep work is a pain since those glued pieces rarely look seamless. If I were considering paint, I'd pick a material that's easier to work with than butcher block.

If you're open to alternatives, you could consider getting a solid core door slab from places like Habitat for Humanity. They can be very affordable and could fit your desk needs nicely!

I get where you're coming from, but honestly, painting butcher block might not be the best choice. A veneered plywood would be cheaper and much easier to paint if that's the route you're considering. Just a thought!

Yeah, I see your point about cost, but with plywood, I’d need to stack it up to match the thickness, which can be a hassle. Plus, I think butcher block gives that solid feel that plywood just doesn't match.

Just save yourself some effort and check out the IKEA countertops—much easier to deal with given the look and feel you want!
