Advice Needed: Should I Fire My HVAC Contractor and Hire Someone New?

Hey everyone! I'm a homeowner currently stuck in the last stages of installing two Carrier HVAC systems in my multi-level townhouse. All the major components are in place, but we're still waiting on the installation of grills, diffusers, and control panels to finally get the systems running. Unfortunately, the contractor we've hired has been incredibly unprofessional and difficult to schedule. He claims he's swamped with other clients and hasn't been able to commit to a date for over a month now, which is really messing with our timeline—no HVAC means we can't put down hardwood flooring, and every day we wait costs us money.

I've thought about just cutting my losses, paying him off, and bringing in someone else to finish the job. Would that be a wise move? What things should I consider before making this decision? Also, can anyone register the HVAC equipment for the warranty, or does it have to be the original contractor who purchased it? Just to clarify, our original contract doesn't specify a completion date since we hired him before getting any permits or timelines sorted. Thanks for any advice you can share!

Definitely don’t pay him more. You have every right to terminate the agreement if there's been no progress. Check your state laws—there could be rules about how long he has to finish work. Also, it might be tough to find a new contractor willing to take over someone else's project, so make sure you have one ready before you let this guy go.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely look into that and start searching for a new contractor.

I honestly wouldn't pay him off. That could give away your leverage! Instead, make it clear that you're no longer going to continue with him and are planning to bring someone else on board to finish the job. He needs to know that you mean business here.
