Advice on Choosing Wood for a Cane

Asked By CraftyGiraffe87 On

I'm planning to carve a cane for my dad, and I'm set on using rosewood for the handle. However, I'm a bit uncertain about what to use for the main body. My dad isn't very heavy, around 70 kg, so I'm considering using hazelnut wood since it's straight and readily available to me. What do you all think? Any suggestions?

Hazelnut wood is a decent choice! It’s actually used for walking sticks, though information on it is somewhat scarce. If you want to learn more about it, check out [this link](https://finland-wood.com/hazelnut-wood/) for the best details I could dig up.

I recommend looking at Paul Sellers' blog. He's got fantastic info on crafting canes and even a YouTube video about it. It could give you some great insights!

Go for it! Just make sure you pick a piece with straight grain. Also, riven wood is usually better than cut wood for this kind of thing.
