Advice on Keeping My Daughter Safe in Her Car Seat

I'm looking for some advice about car seats for my daughter Clara, who's 6 years old, has Primordial dwarfism, and is currently 1'5" tall and weighs 18 pounds. Right now, she's in a rear-facing infant bucket car seat which she fits well, thanks to the newborn insert. Given her growth, it's hard to tell when she may outgrow it, but her physical condition makes it tricky. She's similar in stature to a newborn and has development comparable to an 8-month-old. We've been advised to keep her in a newborn recline due to her fragility. This car seat works well as an infant carrier, which is super helpful since she tires out easily.

What I'm wondering is whether I should keep using the bucket seat, and if there are any ways for Clara to climb into the car seat herself, as I usually have to lift her. It'd be amazing if she could manage to get in and buckle herself without assistance, but her height makes this challenging. Currently, she finds it tough to climb over the side of her car seat, and I'm looking for suggestions that would help her get into the seat safely by herself, especially since it's quite high for her. Any ideas?

It sounds like you really have a good understanding of Clara's needs! You might want to look into swivel car seats like the Graco Turn2Me; they can make it easier for her to get in and out, though keep in mind they aren’t stroller compatible. Another option could be installing running boards on your car, so she can have an easier step up to her seat. Just make sure that she’s strong enough to pull herself up, but watching her should help with that too!

That’s a great thought! I know the swivel seats can really help with visibility too, which may help Clara see out the window. You’re right about the climbing; it’s a multi-step process for her right now. Maybe even a small step stool could help her get onto the floorboard?
