Am I Good with This $50 Router for Woodworking?

I'm a newbie with power tools and recently picked up a Black and Decker 2 HP plunge router (model Firestorm FS1000) at a garage sale for just $50. I unfortunately discovered that it only works with 1/4" bits, while I bought some 1/2" bits thinking it would handle both sizes. From what I've read, 1/2" bits seem to be the standard for many applications, and while 1/4" bits can work, they might not deliver the cleanest cuts when used heavily with dense hardwoods. My main concern is whether this router can effectively meet my woodworking needs, or should I be looking for a more versatile model?

For $50, you got a solid starter router! It should work fine for many woodworking tasks. Just keep in mind that if your project requires larger bits, you might want to get a more powerful 1/2" router in the future. For now, enjoy using what you've got!

Thanks! I'm excited to give it a shot with some edge shaping.

The main thing to know is that the difference between 1/4" and 1/2" bits isn't about crispness of cuts but about power. Typically, routers designed for 1/4" bits aren’t as powerful as those that can handle 1/2" bits. So while you can achieve a clean result with a 1/4" router, just be careful not to take off too much wood in one go or your router might struggle a bit. I've done fine work with just a small 1/4" router—makes flush trimming easy!

Right? Trim routers are surprisingly capable for most tasks, and for anything more complex, like moldings, I’d go with a full-sized router.

If you're using quality 1/4" bits, you should be okay. Just avoid trying to push your 1/4" bits too far, like trying to cut deep grooves all at once. Your router should be good for edge routing and similar tasks but may struggle with heavy-duty work.

Your router is definitely compatible with 1/2" bits. Check out the user manual where it shows there are two collets available: one for 1/4" and one for 1/2" bits. If you can't find the 1/2" collet, you can email Black & Decker for support.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll reach out to see if they can help find the right part.

You should double-check if your router only works with 1/4" bits. For a 2HP model, it seems odd. There might be a collet you're missing, or you could find an aftermarket collet that allows for 1/2" bits.

I found that the Porter Cable 1/2 collet can fit this router, but it's not confirmed anywhere. Might be worth looking into!

This is great news for you! A 2HP router should do well for your needs. Just remember, while it can handle a lot, there may be limits when it comes to more demanding tasks. Test it out and see how it feels for you!
