Am I Overreacting About My Bathroom Remodel?

Hi everyone! I'm a first-time homeowner and just finished remodeling my master bathroom, which was in pretty terrible shape. We had a giant tub that took ages to fill due to low water pressure, so we decided to turn it into a shower. Since the space is long and skinny, we added a bench for aesthetics. Here's where things get interesting: I requested to make a cubby hole for my cat's litter box, so we'd have a neat way to store it. The contractor agreed, and I was super clear about it needing to be at least 16 inches wide and fully tiled inside. After all the work, I noticed some issues. The cubby door is only 14 inches wide and looks off-center with poorly aligned tiles. I'm really frustrated because I feel like I paid a lot for this work, and now it's not what I wanted. Is it crazy to consider tearing it out and starting over? What should I do now?

Honestly, the cubby looks pretty unprofessional. The off-center opening is likely from using different lumber sizes for framing, which a good contractor should have caught. Plus, the tiling being uneven isn't great. I’d push for a redo on it since it sounds like they didn’t follow your instructions well. But at least you discovered that Schluter makes shelves that fit into grout lines; that might save you some hassle in the future!

Right? The whole look makes me question how solid the shower is too. Then again, I’m a plumber, not an expert on tiles.

That’s a neat tip about shelves! I bet it'll help with storage closer to the shower where you want it.

That exposed wood in the cubby is a huge red flag if you’re putting a litter box there—definitely not ideal. You might want to consider insisting they redo the area, especially if it doesn't match what you agreed on. If you have a contract, check what it says about work quality; you might have some leverage there!

Good point! It’s essential that the install holds up, especially in a wet area. Did they send you the final drawings?

Did you already pay them? If not, you might have more say in getting it fixed. If you could share some more photos of the whole bathroom setup, maybe we could suggest better ways to approach fixing this issue. That size oversight is definitely not something to shrug off though!

I’m really not convinced by how it looks; the size is a total mess, and they should have double-checked the measurements.

Yeah, they should've calculated that correctly—it's not rocket science. Using a litter box as a test fit sounds like a smart idea!
