Anyone else scared of insects while gardening? How to get over it?

Last summer was my first attempt at growing my own food, but I found myself completely overwhelmed by the idea of digging in the dirt because of my fear of insects. I'd hold my breath while watering just waiting for bugs to show up. This fear led me to abandon my gardening dreams, but I still really want to give it another shot. Do any of you have similar fears and found ways to cope with them? It's sunny but windy where I am, so I've been considering small greenhouses. However, I'm thinking it might be best to start small to build up some comfort. Anyone have advice?

Thank you for this! I share the same fears—especially about caterpillars. I just learned the hard way about earthworms in my containers, which freaked me out! Right now, I use tools to avoid direct contact with anything that wiggles.

Wearing gardening gloves is a game changer! At first, they might feel annoying, but you really get used to them. I use gloves for anything in the ground. Sure, I could move a worm bare-handed, but I'd rather keep it distant! For potted plants, I sometimes skip the gloves, but having them helps in keeping the ick factor at bay.

I totally get you! I’m seriously creeped out by caterpillars! Last summer I found a couple in my plants and nearly had a meltdown. But baby steps—like using tools or gloves—really do help!

I used to have a serious fear of bees and wasps. I'd avoid areas with them like the plague! But after spending time in my garden, I learned that most insects are really docile. I’ve spent hundreds of hours outside and never had an issue. I suggest taking a moment to just watch them. They’re busy doing their thing and won’t bother you. It's super fascinating! Just keep in mind that they want to be left alone just as much as you do.

Transform that anxiety into curiosity! Watch insects in your garden and try identifying them. It takes practice, but over time, you’ll start to recognize who's beneficial for your garden. Studies show that majority of insects are harmless and actually helpful. If you want an easy start, consider container gardening for a while; it reduces the chance of creepy crawlies. Plus, spending time outside with plants is therapeutic!
