Are Antique Locks Suitable for Modern Homes’ Security?

As a first-time homebuyer, I'm thrilled to have just closed on my house! I've been exploring options for new locks and couldn't help but wonder about the safety of antique-style locks (check out this image for reference: https://imgur.com/a/ZhfOMIc). I've read that real antique locks might not be secure due to the commonality of skeleton keys, meaning anyone with one could potentially access my home. Although newer antique-style versions don't seem to pose this risk, my partner is concerned about their vulnerability to lock-picking. Are these genuine concerns, or are we just overthinking the whole situation?

You know, locks are mainly there to keep honest people out! If someone is determined enough, they'll find a way in. If it were me, I'd suggest upgrading the locks on all exterior doors regardless. A strong modern deadbolt can still look aesthetic and give you peace of mind.

Exactly! A good lock can definitely keep out amateur thieves, at least until they decide to break a window instead.

Honestly, if you're worried about security, antique locks might not be your best bet. The reality is that prying a door open can be easier than picking a lock, especially with antique ones that might not be as sturdy as modern locks. They might not be less secure than newer options, but the difference could be minimal.

I understand your concerns! When I moved into my home, I was obsessed with lock security too. But it hit me that if someone really wants to get in, they could easily just go through a window instead. So in the grand scheme, it might be more about the overall security of your home than just the locks.
