Are Ants in Plant Roots a Big Deal?

I came across a discussion about ants making homes in plant roots and some people were really keen on eliminating them. I get that they're probably worried about having an insect colony inside, but I started wondering—can ants really harm outdoor plants? The only concern I see is them protecting and breeding aphids for the honeydew they produce. Honestly, I think ants can be beneficial because they might protect plants from other pests and help with soil aeration with their tunneling. What do you all think?

Honestly, ants can be a real issue in your plants. They actually farm pests like aphids so they can snack on the sugary juices they produce. While ants are cool little creatures, I definitely wouldn’t want them in my potted plants—they can lead to infestations.

Yes, ants can really cause damage! They sometimes bite the plants, looking for moisture or nectar, and can bring in pests with them like mealybugs. I once lost a huge Dudleya because of an ant infestation! If you see ants, it’s definitely a red flag that something’s wrong.

I'm not a fan of having ants near my plants. They often tend to mealybugs for their sugary nectar, and that can indicate other pest issues. Plus, I really don’t want them invading my pantry! They can definitely cause problems, especially when it comes to certain varieties like grease ants and sugar ants. I keep a close eye on them!

I’ve had ants in my pots, and honestly, it’s never harmed my plants. They seem to love the cozy environment! I've found them mostly in my grittiest pots like Haworthia. However, I prefer to remove them just to keep the pots clear—just a personal choice. I’ve never had issues with ants being there because of aphids or mealies; usually, they just find their own place!
