Are cheap solar panels worth it, or should I save for a proper install?

I’m considering solar but have no equipment or experience yet. Is it smarter to start with inexpensive panels, or save for a professionally installed system?

Cheap panels can make sense if you have plenty of space and a low-cost way to mount them. But compare the whole setup, not just the panel price: mounting hardware, transport, inverter, wiring, and the work to install it can outweigh the savings. Smaller panels may also need more brackets for the same output.

So I’d price the mounting and other parts before deciding how many panels to buy?

I’d start small if the goal is to learn. A couple of panels can help you understand the setup and what your site can accommodate before you spend heavily. For used panels, check their condition and measured output if possible, rather than treating the advertised wattage as guaranteed.

If you’re new to solar, get a professional quote too. It gives you a full-system comparison, including installation, and helps show what you’d be taking on with a DIY build. Cheap panels aren’t much of a bargain if the electrical design or mounting is beyond your skills.

That makes sense. I’ll compare complete system costs first, then see whether a small DIY setup is a reasonable way to learn.
