Are Generic 18V Tool Batteries Worth the Risk?

I'm specifically curious about generic 18V batteries for Makita tools but would love to hear about your experiences with any knock-off batteries. The prices are really tempting since I'm considering buying a few, but I'm worried about quality and safety. What do you think?

I’ve heard some pretty bad things about knock-off batteries. One guy noted that a few were tested and many didn’t perform well at all. There was even a report of one catching fire! Generally, the consensus is that they tend to sag under load and have significantly lower mAh than branded ones. It’s a real roll of the dice on quality.

That’s exactly the issue! Lithium-ion battery fires are serious business, and most fires seem to come from cheap, unregulated batteries. As a firefighter, I wouldn’t risk it. I’ve been using my DeWalt batteries for years and they’ve held up great!

I had a couple of knock-offs for my tools, and while they worked, they didn't last nearly as long as the official ones. They might save you money upfront, but the performance and lifespan really fall short. Sometimes it's worth it to just wait for a sale on reputable brands, and you'll likely end up spending less in the long run.

Totally agree! I did score some great deals on genuine batteries during sales, and they end up being much more reliable. Definitely helps to watch for discounts.

Honestly, I’ve had a mix of experiences. I bought some knock-off Ryobi batteries that were way cheaper than the originals, and to my surprise, they held up just as well! Others swear by the brand names, though, and I get the safety concerns. It’s a gamble, really. If you're using them for light DIY projects, maybe they’re okay, but for heavy-duty use? Stick with the trusted brands.

That’s a good point. If you’re cautious, maybe you can find some decent generics, but I still worry about them catching fire during heavier use.
