Are Leaf Guard Gutters Worth It? Pros and Cons Discussion

I'm looking into new gutters since mine are beyond repair, and I've been getting lots of suggestions for Leaf Guard-type gutter protection systems. I've heard that these can effectively prevent leaves and twigs from clogging downspouts, but I've also come across concerns about potential ice dams forming, which could damage my roof. I know I'll need to clean the gutters annually regardless, but I'm wondering if there are any other important points I should consider before making a decision.

Honestly, you're paying a premium for these proprietary products and the exclusive service territory. I've talked to a couple of friends who run gutter cleaning businesses and they think it’s not worth the money at all. My other friend, who used to install them, agrees. He claims that just having larger gutters and ensuring proper installation of the downspouts is the best way to go. I think he's onto something!

I went with a leaf filter system and it's been a game changer! Before, I was cleaning my gutters every few weeks because of the pine needles from my neighbor's trees. Now, I haven't had to touch them in three years! My ice dams have actually improved because there’s no extra buildup during the winter. Plus, they offer financing options so it was pretty doable cost-wise. I had a small leak once, but they were super quick about fixing it, so the warranty seems solid too.

I've had mixed experiences with Leaf Guard gutters. While they do a great job of keeping most debris out of the downspouts, leaves can sometimes pile up on top of them, which kind of defeats the purpose. If you have pine trees nearby, I'd skip them because those needles just get stuck and are hard to blow off. So, it's less work most of the time, but it can turn into a big headache if they get clogged.

Yeah, sometimes going for wider gutters might be better so the leaves just fall right off. It's all about what works for your specific situation!
