Are My Tomatoes Safe After Sitting on a Pewter Plate?

Hey everyone! I made a bit of a blunder today. I harvested two tomatoes and accidentally left them on a pewter plate for about an hour and a half. I remember hearing that this could lead to problems since tomatoes can absorb lead from pewter, which could cause lead poisoning. I'm really concerned about whether it's safe to eat my tomatoes now. Does anyone have info on this?

If the tomatoes are whole and didn’t actually touch the pewter inside, you should be fine! The main concern is when the acidic tomato flesh contacts the pewter, but if they just had skin contact, you're likely okay. Glad you didn’t slice them up!

I didn't slice them! Thanks for clearing that up. I was worried since I couldn't find much info on this.

It really depends on the type of pewter you have. Most modern pewter doesn't contain lead; it's usually made from a mix of tin, copper, and antimony, so you might be in the clear. Just check your plate if you can!
