Are Pecan Trees a Good Choice for Backyard Gardening?

I'm thinking about planting a pecan tree in my backyard. I've heard they can take quite a while, around 6-10 years, before they start producing nuts, but once they do, they can keep producing for decades. Has anyone had success with growing pecans? I'm curious about a few things: How much space do they need? Are there dwarf varieties available? Do I need to plant two trees for pollination? I'd love to get your experiences and advice regarding growing these trees!

Pecan trees can grow really big, sometimes reaching heights of 60 to 100 feet! They do need decent space and are best suited for regions with mild winters and plenty of water. A pair of different varieties is often recommended for pollination because while the trees have both male and female flowers, they don't open simultaneously. Just a heads up, they can be a bit messy with falling leaves, nuts, and pollen. But hey, if you have the space, you'll enjoy some delicious nuts and great shade!

Yeah, they're definitely a commitment! But the shade is awesome, especially during the hot summers. Just make sure to plan around them, so they don't overshadow your garden.

And be prepared for the cleanup! The mess is worth it if you're after those tasty nuts!

I grew up with my grandparents' pecan trees, and they turned into fantastic shade providers. We'd always gather the dropped nuts, which brought back fond memories! Just keep in mind they need space, and you might need to deal with some maintenance, but they're worth it if you don’t mind some work.

I have a few pecan trees on my property, and they're great for attracting wildlife like birds and squirrels. I've only gotten nuts a couple of times due to low rainfall here in Texas, but the shade they provide is so valuable. Just be ready to share some nuts with the critters! They can also get pretty messy with pollen and falling branches, so keep that in mind.

In my neighborhood, everyone has at least one pecan tree, and they're a great asset! They do typically bear nuts every other year, which is quite normal. As for the height, they definitely grow tall, but that shade is a blessing for gardening. Just keep them pruned and maintained, and you should be fine! Honestly, they're totally worth it if you don't mind some upkeep.

Totally agree! I've got a big one in my yard, and while it requires some care, it's beautiful and provides tons of shade.
