I'm about to start working on my first vintage hand tool—specifically, a Sargent jointer plane that needs some serious restoration. It's got a lot of rust and possibly some pitting, but for the price, it seemed like a good project. I'm worried about the blade condition, so I might end up needing a replacement. While I've seen plenty of modern blades for Stanley and Record planes, I haven't seen any for Sargent planes. Can anyone tell me if the blades from Stanley can fit into the Sargent jointer? If they're not interchangeable, where can I find replacement blades for Sargent planes?

Definitely, any iron that fits a Stanley will work for a Sargent! Just remember to use the Sargent chipbreaker since they might not line up perfectly with the Stanley design. Better to be safe and stick with the chipbreaker that originally came with your plane.
I did some digging and found that the blade from an older Stanley #4 is actually about 0.5mm wider than the Sargent's, but they have similar lengths. The Stanley Handyman blade from the '70s is also compatible, just a tad shorter. The only thing to watch out for is the flipped hole for the chip breaker screw, but that's usually not a big issue. So yeah, older Stanley blades should work! Also, if you're near Pittsburgh, I've got some spare blades I can share with you!
