Hi everyone! My partner and I just moved into our first home in the central Piedmont region, and we're working on getting our garden sorted out. We've noticed our flower beds are overrun with little black ants. Is it okay to just let them be? I've cleared out a lot of weeds, and they seem to thrive in one area. We've used diatomaceous earth to keep them from getting inside, and since we don't have kids or pets, I'm wondering if there's any harm in letting the ants stay?

Totally agree! Ants are part of the garden ecosystem and they really love peonies. So, if you've got peonies, you're probably in good shape with the ants around!
Hey! Gotta say, ants are actually pretty beneficial. They usually don't harm your plants and can help aerate the soil with their tunneling. Plus, they eat pests that could trouble your plants. I think it's totally fine to leave them be! Just make sure if you decide to plant in those areas, they won't mind. They'll adapt and rebuild if you dig around a bit.
