I'm looking to transform my 1939 home's screened-in porch (which has a concrete slab and a roof) into a cozy 3-season room for myself and my cats. So far, I've received two quotes: one for a prefab sunroom at $18K and another for custom windows and installation at $14K. I'm not sure if these prices are reasonable for this type of project. What specific questions should I be asking the contractors? Also, the custom windows are labeled as 'Solar Cooling LowE Glass with Argon Gas.' While the porch already has electricity, there's no HVAC system. Is this a smart move?

I can’t comment on the exact costs, but remember that window quality really impacts pricing. 'LowE' has different performance ratings—E2 is standard, while E3 does a better job blocking heat but can cost more. We used Marvin Essential casement windows with E3 for the ones facing west, and I've been really happy with how they perform against the summer sun.
It's definitely important to review plans each contractor will provide. If you can, try to develop your own plans, as you'll have a clearer idea of what to expect. Don't worry if you're not familiar with the details; just ensure their plans are aligned with your vision!
