Are There Any Downsides to Installing a Tankless Water Heater Outside?

I'm planning to remodel my old garage from the 1960s and turn a part of it into living space. Currently, I have a standard tank water heater taking up a lot of room. I've decided to switch to a tankless system to save space, and I recently learned that I can install one outside my house. I'm curious if there are any significant downsides to this outdoor option compared to placing it inside. I live in Los Angeles, where the coldest temperatures are around the mid-40s, so freezing isn't a concern. However, I do worry about exposure to rain when it's not a drought. Also, a gas line is conveniently close to where I'm considering the installation. Any thoughts?

One major downside could be theft if it's not secured properly. You might need to put it in an enclosure to protect it from the elements, but rain shouldn't be a huge issue. Overall, it's worth considering.

Honestly, I can't think of any cons for an outdoor tankless system versus an indoor one. I'm also in LA and have two set up outside. Just keep an eye on your vent pipe; make sure that roof overhang won't mess with it, and check that the unit is designed for outdoor use.

Great point! I didn’t even think about the roof overhang. If the spot I have in mind has a long overhang, do you think there's a way around that for proper venting?
