Are There Any Risks to Luring Feral Cats into My Garden for Rat Control?

I've noticed that I have at least one rat living in my garden or greenhouse, and I discovered its droppings recently. I prefer not to use poison since it can harm other wildlife. Instead, I want to know if attracting local feral cats could be a solution to deal with the rodent issue. I'm aware of the potential impact on local bird populations and don't plan to keep a cat myself, but I'm considering using something like catnip to draw the feral cats that are already in the area. Is it morally questionable or risky to encourage these cats to hang around my yard?

Attracting feral cats has some downsides, though. They might leave droppings everywhere, and listening to their nighttime fights can be annoying. Plus, they aren't ideal for the local bird population. If you’re looking for eco-friendly alternatives for rodent control, try corn gluten-based solutions or creative trap placements. It's all about finding what works best!

Great suggestion on traps! Just make sure to conceal them well so the rats don’t get suspicious.

Attracting feral cats can lead to some issues, mainly related to cat poop. If you're growing edible plants, that could pose a health risk since cat feces can carry pathogens. However, if you're just growing flowers, it might not be as big of a problem. Just something to keep in mind!

Exactly! Stick to non-edibles if you go that route, just to be safe.

Using catnip might be a good call! It can help lure the cats over to handle the pests. Also, TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) could be beneficial, especially if you can keep the feral cats healthy with vaccinations. I had a neighbor’s cat that kept the mice away from my garden, and it was great not dealing with those pests anymore.

Totally agree! Healthy cats can definitely help keep the pest population down.
