Hey everyone! I'm in a bit of a pickle over here. Two years ago, when we bought our house, the inspector told us that a specific drain was no longer in use and wouldn't be an issue. But low and behold, now it keeps flooding our basement every time it rains! It's a real hassle to deal with this puddle. I'm looking for advice on how to fix this issue once and for all because it's been a real hazard. The drain itself looks rusty and gross. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like a bit of a mess! Did the inspector actually check the drain physically, or was it more of a guess? It's possible that groundwater is seeping into your basement through the drain. Start by ensuring that water isn’t pooling around your home’s foundation and that your gutters are directing water away properly. A sump pump might be helpful too! If you suspect dirty water might be coming up, calling a plumber to scope the drain could save you a lot of hassles in the long run.
You never know what can happen in just two years! Cracks could have developed in the pipe, which might be letting water rise through the abandoned drain. A plumber should be able to pinpoint the source of the water and fix it, whether it's a crack or some other issue. It’s best to get it checked out so it doesn't turn into a bigger problem!
I have to wonder how the inspector knew the drain was inactive… It might be worth having it scoped to check for any cracks or blockages. If you’re seeing clear water, that's good, but make sure to check your yard drainage too. You really want to keep water away from your foundation! Consider some exterior solutions like better grading or extended downspouts. Good luck!
