Hey everyone! I just got a Dewalt DWS773 miter saw, and I'm completely new to this. I'd love to hear any tips or advice. Can it cut hardwoods? Are there important things I should keep in mind or watch out for? Also, can I just grab a random piece of wood, even if I'm not sure what it is, and cut it? What about cutting used wood, like a finished lacquered plank that was used as a table leg? I'm asking what might seem like basic questions, so any guidance would be appreciated!

First off, definitely read the manual! It's your best friend. You can cut pretty much any wood, just keep in mind that the thickness is what's going to limit you. Move the blade a bit slower when cutting through denser hardwoods. Make sure to familiarize yourself with all the locks, especially if you’re doing angled cuts. Always wear eye and ear protection, and use your right hand to operate the saw while your left keeps the wood steady against the rail. Also, respect the saw—it can cut through anything, including fingers! After you cut, let the blade stop spinning before you lift it, and make sure your workspace is clear to prevent wood from falling. Enjoy making stuff!
You’re good to cut pretty much any wood, even if it has paint or a finish, as long as you're careful about hitting any nails or screws. A high tooth blade can improve your cut quality, so consider that. And don't forget to use the clamp that comes with the saw to secure your workpiece—it's really important! If you're cutting longer boards, make sure they're supported properly. Also, building a dust shroud is helpful since these saws can create a lot of dust! Keep your PPE on, too.

Quick question about the clamp: should I put it as close to the cut as possible, or is it okay to place it further away?
