Beginner Woodworking Advice for Building Bookshelves

Asked By Xy3!z4Qk On

I've been waiting for years to get my hands on some Billy bookshelves from IKEA to finally get my books out of boxes. However, I'm hesitant to spend $800 on particle board cabinets, especially with kids and dogs around. I'm thinking about taking on the challenge of building my own, but I've never built anything before. I need guidance on where to start: what tools I'll need, how to join wood, how to install doors, and how to measure supplies considering joints. I'm also looking for beginner-friendly websites or books and any tips or considerations I might not be aware of. Any advice on how to get started?

Honestly, it might not be cheaper to build your own bookshelves compared to buying the IKEA ones. There’s this saying in woodworking, 'Why would I pay $800 to get it now when I can spend $1500 and wait 4 months to build it?' Trust me, you'll end up needing tools that can add another $300-$400 to your project cost. Good quality plywood is already around $120 a sheet, and you'll probably need 2 sheets to replicate a full-size Billy. If you want to save some cash, just go for the IKEA shelves. But if you're itching to start woodworking as a hobby, try a smaller project first, like a bench or box, then work your way up to shelves.

I appreciate the advice! Could you give me a list of those essential tools? I do have some from my parents' place, so I might not need to buy too much. Also, can you suggest a couple of beginner projects?
