Best Bench Dogs and Drill Bits for My Workbench?

Asked By CraftyNinja88 On

I'm in the market for some bench dogs and hold-down clamps and I'm seeing options like Rockler's dogs for $14.99 each or a 4-pack from Taylor Tool for $20. Are there significant differences or favorites among these? Also, what drill bit would work best for drilling holes into my workbench? I don't own a drill guide but I have access to a mag drill with variable speed. Would it be feasible to bring that home, set it up on a steel plate on my bench, and use it for drilling? I'm a bit overwhelmed already this morning!

I just drilled dog holes in my bench last week. My bench top is 4 inches thick and I used a Forstner bit with a Milescraft drill guide. It worked like a charm with minimal tear out and smooth holes! Even if you don't have a guide, a Forstner bit can still give you a clean hole without much hassle. Check out my setup here!

Nice setup! That looks super clean. I think a Forstner bit is definitely the way to go for clean holes.
