Best Budget Options for a Starter Plane?

I'm working with a really tight budget and trying to find a good plane to get started on woodworking. I can snag one from Menards for free thanks to some rebates, or I could go for a Buck Bros plane at Home Depot. I'm not aiming for top-notch quality—just something that works well enough for a beginner. I'm comfortable sharpening tools, so that's not a concern for me.

Honestly, I'd skip the big box stores entirely for a plane. You might want to look for an old Stanley, particularly a number 4 model. They're super versatile and can often be found online for a decent price. Places like eBay usually have good options, and once you clean it up and tune it, you'll have a reliable tool that'll last you for years.

If you're considering budget options, you might want to reach out to see if someone can donate a Stanley plane to you. The new ones at Menards and Home Depot aren't likely to hold up well or be very usable for your projects. A vintage model can be both affordable and effective!
