Best Clover Seed Recommendations for a High Traffic Lawn?

Asked By GardenGuru2023 On

I'm looking for some good clover seed options to sow in my existing lawn, which sees a lot of foot traffic—especially with my two dogs around. My garden is about 25m x 15m, and I've got some bald patches, mainly because my husband tends to follow the same path to his favorite spot in the garden. The soil is clay, and the garden gets a decent amount of sun since it's east-facing. I tried sowing some clover last year, but the results were mixed. I'm hoping to find the best quality seeds, as they can be quite pricey, and I'd love tips for achieving the best results. I'm also interested in different varieties since I love flowers! Thanks in advance!

If you want to protect your clover, consider laying down a stepping stone path where your husband usually walks. Clover doesn’t handle foot traffic well, but it’s surprisingly resistant to dog urine! This way, your lawn can have a chance to recover in those high-traffic areas. Plus, when it’s healthy, it can look really nice!

I see your point! That makes sense about the die-off in spots where it was trampled. I didn’t want to resort to stones, but it might be necessary to help the grass recover. We’re really lucky we haven’t had too many burn patches. Bigger garden means less concentrated foot traffic!

I’d recommend trying micro clover! It’s low-growing and does well under foot traffic, plus it spreads nicely. I found that red clover works great as a temporary cover crop, but it will die off after flowering. Mixing in some grass varieties can help too! Oh, and I noticed that the white clover got rid of some dandelions in my lawn. Also, it made cleaning up after my dog way easier! Good luck!

Thanks for the tip! Is red clover an annual or does it just bloom once a year? I’ll definitely look into micro clover!
