Best Components for DIY Off-Grid Solar Setup in Wisconsin?

Hey everyone! I'm working on setting up a completely off-grid home in Wisconsin, and I want to make sure I'm choosing the right components for my solar system. I'm looking for advice on inverters, generators, batteries, and battery control systems. I've already chosen my solar panels (450W Canadian Solar panels), but I need some guidance on other equipment.

For the generator, I'm hoping for one that can automatically turn on with the inverter. I was considering an inverter with generator assist, like one with around 8K power; it's crucial for our winter heating needs since we rely on gas and wood.

As for batteries, I'm primarily at the research stage, but I'd love something app-regulated if possible. If you have good experiences or recommendations for these components, I'd really appreciate your insights before making my purchases!

If you're after quality, consider avoiding cheaper Chinese inverters. Victron is a solid choice; it has a great reputation, especially in marine use. You'll want an inverter that’s compatible with your generator, as some just pass loads through and can trip if the frequency varies. As for batteries, getting some solid ones is key. Look into the BMS systems for monitoring, but try to link them to Venus for the best integration instead of just phone apps. I’ve been using Victron for almost a decade without issues, and they work well for my needs.

Thanks for the tip! What inverter model do you have?

For your panels, bifacial ones might be a great choice, especially in snowy areas since they can gather light from both sides and help with snow melting. Sungold is a well-respected brand, but keep in mind Wisconsin does have other off-grid homes already—you’re not the first! Soldiers Grove, for example, has been using alternative energy since the '80s!
