Hey everyone! I'm looking for some advice on the best type of containers to use for growing culinary ginger, turmeric, and galangal indoors this winter. I'm new to this and have started these plants already, but they're growing slowly. Since I'm in zone 5b/6a in central NY, I need to transplant them indoors in a couple of months. I've got about three of each plant and want to keep them in separate containers, but space is tight. I have a few 5-gallon nursery pots, but I'm wondering if I should focus on wider pots instead of deeper ones given their growth habits. I also have a couple of window boxes of varying sizes. Does anyone have experience with this? What kind of containers work best for you?

I'd recommend focusing on galangal and turmeric since organic ginger is usually cheap to buy. Just a heads up, it can take 18 months or more for root crops to mature. I've had a heated greenhouse before, but now I’m using a basement to keep mine alive, which is a bit tricky. If you can use good grow lights in the winter, that could help you get a small crop by spring!

Fingers crossed! What kind of container do you use in your basement? Do you think those window boxes of mine would be too shallow?
