I've been using dishwashers for over 40 years, and I've noticed that the designs on my mugs and dishes are fading, which wasn't a problem in the past. It seems like dishwasher detergent formulas have changed, possibly leading to this issue. Is there a specific detergent out there that won't damage or fade the designs on my mugs and dishes?

I think it's actually more about the new dishwashers' hot water heaters being more efficient. Older models didn’t have that feature, so it's possible the water temperature is causing the designs to wear out more quickly. Have you tried adjusting the settings?
Honestly, I believe the problem lies with the change in printing techniques. I have some old Pyrex that still has all its markings after countless washes, but a newer one I got recently lost half its measurements! I usually use Cascade and Finish and haven't had issues with wear, so it must be the mugs' designs that are the problem.
It might be the way the mugs are printed. Have you noticed if the fading is happening to new mugs or old ones? New styles often use digital printing, which tends to wear off faster compared to the traditional screen printing used years ago. That could explain the fading you're seeing!

Yeah, that’s so frustrating! I’ve got vintage Pyrex measuring cups, and it’s such a bummer when the markings fade away.
