I'm working on a walnut kitchen table finish that needs to withstand family use. Durability is key here since the client wants to maintain the beautiful walnut appearance with a low-gloss finish. I've thought about using something like Renner 2k, but I've heard that can be quite complex. I've also used HVLP with General Finishes high performance top coat and Rubio in past projects. What do you all recommend for a durable, family-friendly finish?

I refinished an oak kitchen table that's been around since the 1930s using high-gloss Minwax with a total of 14 thin coats. I sanded lightly every two coats and waited 24 hours for it all to dry. It's held up great through seven years and even with the kids and grandkids using it regularly!
I love using Waterlox on walnut; it’s super durable! If you need a quicker method, try applying shellac first, then spray a conversion varnish like Emtech 8000cv or Enduro. Both are straightforward and give a fantastic finish.
For a durable finish, I recommend using a water-based General Finishes conversion varnish over a shellac base coat. The shellac really enhances the grain and applies quickly, while the conversion varnish offers impressive durability. If you're considering a 2k, a water-based poly would take durability to the next level!

That sounds interesting! How easy is that to apply compared to some other finishes?
