Hey everyone! I'm venturing into gardening and landscaping, and I've got a specific need for a hedge since I live in Northern Europe where all four seasons are quite distinct. I'm looking for something that can handle freezing winters and sunny summers. Ideally, I want to plant about 100 meters (or 300 feet) of hedge to block out noise, dust, and prying eyes from a nearby road. My target height is at least 2 meters (7 feet) and I would love something that grows densely. The hedge will be facing south on one side and north on the other, so it gets plenty of sun. The soil tends to be heavy and clay-like, but local fruit trees and berry bushes seem to thrive. I can amend the planting holes with some soil mix or compost if necessary. I'm going for a classic green hedge that can be trimmed into a neat rectangular shape (or a bit trapezoidal if needed). An evergreen option would be the best, though I'm also open to semi-evergreen if it retains leaves throughout winter. From what I've seen locally, I'm considering options like European Beech, Hornbeam, Ligustrum vulgare, or some variety of Thuja, although I've heard Thuja might take a while to shape into a hedge. Would love to hear your thoughts, suggestions, or any experiences you've had!

Pyracantha could be a fantastic choice! It’s evergreen, shapes well into a traditional hedge, and has beautiful flowers and berries that attract wildlife. Plus, the thorns add a layer of protection, which might be a bonus for you!
Have you thought about Ilex? I know one option is Ilex x meserveae Blue Princess/Prince. It might not be the prettiest, but it’s functional and could fit your needs. Just a heads up, it can be on the slow side, so keep that in mind!
Ligustrum ovalifolium may stay greener compared to others, but it's crucial to check if it thrives in your specific climate. Other good options could be Eleagnus angustifolia or Arborvitae, but I’d recommend Taxus over Thuja for hedges if you're looking for something that'll last. If you have the room, Prunus laurocerasus or Aucuba are worth considering too!
Thanks for the tip! Ilex sounds solid for functionality. I guess I can sacrifice some aesthetics for a strong hedge!
