I'm in southern California, and my bamboo fence isn't providing much privacy. I'm looking for plants that can quickly cover it up—I'm open to using a trellis if suggested! I'd love to find something that's native and attracts bees or hummingbirds, can thrive in poor soil, and is low maintenance without causing damage in the long run. Any recommendations?

I’d recommend going with California lilac or passionflower. They adapt really well to the southern California climate and can easily be trained on a trellis. Both are native plants that not only look great but also attract beneficial insects, making them a solid choice for privacy without being a hassle to care for.
Definitely seconding passionflower! Once it takes off, it grows super fast and dense. Plus, the flowers are stunning and attract bumblebees. If you choose an edible variety, you could even get some passion fruit! Just keep in mind that you'll need access to the other side of the fence for pruning, as it can spread a lot.
I’d say avoid bamboo altogether! It's not worth the potential headache. Instead, how about a trumpet vine? They’re fantastic for attracting hummingbirds and can really fill up a space quickly!
