Best Fast-Spreading Plants for a Boggy Ditch

I'm dealing with a drainage ditch that's around 400 ft long and quite wide, leading to my pond. It's mostly boggy, and every year, it's a hassle to manage the weeds that grow there. I'm looking for suggestions on where to buy bulk, fast-spreading plants suitable for this type of ground. Emergent plants would work as well. Any recommendations?

Hey, I totally get the struggle with boggy areas! It's best not to mow it as those weeds can be the very bog plants you need. If you're considering woody plants, willows are a great choice since they thrive in wet conditions.

I have a willow growing too! I want to fill my space with more vegetation, but it’s pretty bare right now, so I’m looking for additional options for a fuller look.

You might want to check out American lotus and cattails! They are known for spreading and could help fill up that ditch quickly. Plus, they add some nice texture to the area.

I love the idea of cattails, but I also crave more color in my garden. Do you think lotus will spread quickly enough to dominate the area?

A fun method is to find someone with cattails and ask for a seed head. Then you can scatter the seeds across your ditch—it’s like planting magic! But I understand wanting more variety; maybe adding pickerel rush, arrowhead, or water iris might enhance the colors you’re looking for.

I totally want those too! Just wish I knew where to buy them in bulk. I'm hoping to create a colorful bog oasis.
