Hey everyone! I recently built a footbridge with logs I cut in my backyard. I've stripped the bark off to help prevent insect damage, and now I need to figure out how to secure some 4 ft. deck planks across the logs for a stable walking surface. I spoke to a rep at Fasteners Plus who suggested using timber screws directly into the logs without predrilling. However, I've also seen recommendations for structural wood screws that sound similar. I'm planning on using about 4-6 screws for each plank to ensure they distribute the load properly. Do you think these options will hold up over time as the wood dries, or should I consider something else? Additionally, since the planks will overhang the bridge slightly, I'm thinking of reinforcing them with long 1"x2" pieces attached underneath. Would this approach be effective or is it overkill? Any insights would be appreciated!

I recommend using coarse thread galvanized lag bolts with washers instead of screws. The screws might pull out as the logs shift over time. A lag bolt would provide much more stability.

Thanks for the suggestion! Do you have a specific product in mind I could check out?
