Best Finish for My First Cedar Spoon?

Asked By SpoonCrafter92 On

Hey everyone! I just finished carving my very first spoon out of cedar, and I'm considering using tung oil to finish it. I'm looking for suggestions on whether that's a good choice or if there might be better options out there. What do you think?

While pure tung oil is effective, I prefer a product that’s half tung oil and half citrus solvent, like the one from Real Milk Paint. Mahoney’s Walnut Oil works well too, especially if you want a natural finish. Just make sure to follow the application instructions for the best results!

One great option I use is a mix of 50% walnut oil and 50% beeswax. Just melt them together in a mason jar using a double boiler method. It’s food safe, lasts a long time, and is super easy to apply—just scoop some on your finger, let it soak into the wood, and wipe off the excess after a bit. I always include a small jar of it when I gift my spoons!

That's great information, thank you! Quick question: why couldn’t someone just use olive oil each time they use the spoon? I've seen a friend do that with his cutting board, and it seems to hold up fine.

How does the spoon taste after using that mix? I'm curious!
