Best Hand Tools for 13-Year-Old Woodworker?

Hey everyone! I'm trying to set my son up with some hand tools for woodworking. I previously got some great advice about starting with hand tools instead of power tools. I came across Veritas tools, but there are so many options on their website that I'm lost. I also saw Florip Toolworks recommended for saws but I can't tell the difference between them. I've started watching Paul Sellers' videos and I'm considering signing us up for his online class.

Can anyone help me out with specific recommendations on what tools to buy and where to find them? Thanks a lot!

Why not pick a simple project to kick things off? Building a toolbox can be a fun way to start. You could look for designs online or prototype with cardboard. After settling on a design, you can gather your tools! For saws, I also recommend the Japanese pull saw; it’s seriously great. If you consider hand planes, check vintage ones on eBay for some good deals. They'll be perfect for smoothing and shaping your projects!

That sounds like a solid plan! Prototyping first is a clever idea—really helps visualize your project!

You'll want some essential tools to get started. A Japanese pull saw is a must-have, and if you already have a power saw, you might skip this. Grab a flush cut saw and a basic chisel set from Home Depot or Lowe’s, plus a wooden mallet. A combination square, wheel marking gauge, and tape measure will also be super handy. If you're comfortable, consider adding a hand plane, but they can be tricky to maintain. And definitely get safety gear like glasses and gloves!

I recommend starting with a Japanese pull saw, which cuts on the pull stroke. It's easier to handle than traditional European saws and has a thinner blade. Check out the Ryoba style; it's got rip teeth on one side and crosscut teeth on the other. Perfect for beginners!
