I'm looking to install floating bathroom shelves and need advice on which type of solid wood would perform best in a humid environment. My options are White Oak, Walnut, Alder (knotty), Alder (superior), Maple, Pine, and Poplar. My bathroom has a vent fan, so while it can get steamy during showers, it's not excessively humid. Any thoughts on which wood stands up better in these conditions? Thanks!

I'd focus more on how you finish the wood rather than just the type of wood itself. For bathrooms, a hardwood like red oak is a solid choice—I've built some floating shelves with it, finished using Danish oil, and they've held up wonderfully in my humid bathroom for about five years. It really helps resist moisture!
From my experience, white oak is fantastic for humid areas. I've had mine in the bathroom for over 4 years, finished with Osmo, and they still look brand new! Definitely a great option if you're dealing with moisture.
I’d say white oak is probably your best bet for humidity resistance—it's been used in boat building for ages! Maple is a solid second choice. Walnut’s okay but definitely needs sealing. Alder isn’t the best for moisture, and pine or poplar might warp easily since they’re softer woods.
I’ve got maple shelves in my bathroom that have been finished with Waterlox, and they’ve held up beautifully for 10 years! Definitely considering this wood too if you're after durability.

That's reassuring to hear! I'm considering using some leftover red oak for a vanity mirror cabinet too and was thinking about that same finish. Glad to know yours have stood up well!
