Best Material to Block Cooking Smells from Vents?

Asked By CraftyCat123 On

I'm looking for a way to block off my home vents to keep cooking smells out of my room. My plan is to use a plastic or rubber sheet that fits under the vent covers, securing them in place while sealing the edges. I need advice on what kind of material would be safe and resilient enough to use, without cracking or tearing when pressed down. I want to avoid using tin foil and would prefer something like thin plastics or rubber sheets. It doesn't need to be fireproof; just durable and effective. Any suggestions?

Consider using a mylar emergency poncho, cut to size. If you're dealing with varying temperatures, heavy-duty trash bags or tarps could work too. Just remember that blocking vents might redirect heat or exhaust back into the room, so keep that in mind!

I'm sealing off all the vents in the room, but redirecting heat is my goal. Industial trash bags might do the trick. Do tarps provide a tight seal?

A quick tip is to blow up a balloon inside the duct where it changes shape from rectangular to square. It creates an almost perfect seal! I've used this method during basement work to keep dust out.

That's a clever idea!

You could try stuffing a plastic bag into the vent and then filling it with expanding foam. It seals things really well!

Yeah, that was one of my top ideas too. The foam really expands and fills the gaps.
