Best Materials and Size for a Router Table Top?

Asked By CraftyDesigns123 On

I'm looking to build a table for my DeWalt full-sized router and I've already picked up the Rockler insert plate, cutout template, and leveling hardware. I'm trying to figure out the best size for the top—would 24" x 32" work? Also, what material should I use? Is plywood suitable, or would MDF be a better option? Any additional tips would be greatly appreciated!

I’d recommend going with melamine for the surface—it has a nice slippery finish that helps pieces glide smoothly. As for the size, make it as big as your workspace allows! I actually fitted my router in the extension of my table saw to save some space. You could also check for leftover countertop pieces at a local store for something sturdy and ready-made.

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend MDF for the top due to its sensitivity to moisture. You might want to consider laminates such as phenolic or HPL panels for a more durable finish. The size you mentioned is fine, but you'll want to ensure that it matches your fence setup for the best results. Also, remember—there's a huge difference with moisture resistance!

Great question! MDF can work but I'd suggest melamine as a better choice overall. It provides a smooth surface that’s less prone to moisture issues compared to MDF. If you spill something on MDF, it can soak it up and cause bumps, which is a real hassle for router tables. A size of 24 x 32 is pretty common and should be fine for most tasks. Just make sure it aligns with your fence.
