Best Methods for Stripping Clear Coat from Reclaimed Oak Boards?

Asked By CraftyFox97 On

Hey everyone! I've recently acquired some reclaimed oak boards that have a clear coat on them, and I'm looking for advice on how to strip that finish off. I'm considering using my table saw or a planer, but since I don't own a drum sander, I'm open to alternative methods as well. I know using these tools might ruin the blades, so any suggestions that won't wreck my equipment would be appreciated!

If you want to take a different approach, I suggest googling "polyurethane chemical strip." That way, you can find out if you want to go that route or just throw it through a planer. Personally, if I had a lot of wood, I’d probably just go straight for the planer, but it really depends on how much you have to strip!

First off, how much wood are we talking about? If it’s a decent amount, like around 150 feet, using a lunchbox planer could be a good call, especially if your blades are disposable. Just be mindful that fresh blades are an investment, so it could be a bummer to mess them up right away!

Yeah, I totally get that! Fresh blades should last a decent while—but I’d still be careful with any method that can damage them.
