Best Natural Homemade Fertilizers for Tomatoes?

Asked By NatureNut42 On

I'm looking for natural homemade fertilizers that can really boost the growth of my tomatoes. I live quite a distance from the nearest store, so store-bought options aren't feasible for me. I primarily grow cherry tomatoes and pineapple tomatoes, and I'd love to hear about your go-to homemade fertilizers!

If you're looking into composting, don't forget about worm castings! They're fantastic and help your plants absorb nutrients more effectively, especially when you mix in things like crushed egg shells too.

Making your own compost is pretty simple if you have some space. Just gather food scraps, leaves, grass clippings, coffee grounds — the usual suspects! You can even ask around to get more from friends or local shops. Just make sure to keep it moist!

Using my aquarium water has been a game changer for my tomatoes. I swap out about 10% of the water weekly, and it really helps not just my tomatoes but also my roses. Oh, and I started using it on my grapes too! Just make sure you're using fresh water, not anything salty from a reef tank or anything.

So it's fresh water only? I guess I may have misinterpreted your idea at first.

Haha, yeah, definitely not from my reef tank! I also use fresh water for my other plants — it's brilliant!

Believe it or not, diluted urine can work wonders as a fertilizer! It's super cheap and free, although it's a bit controversial. Just mix it with water to make it a bit less strong before using it. Crazy, huh?

I've been using food scraps for fertilizer too! I bury them a good foot deep in the soil, and it seems to disappear quickly, so something is definitely munching on them. I've even got some DIY worm bins in my raised beds to help with composting.
