I'm starting to grow a variety of vegetables, but I'm looking for cost-effective options for pots. I've heard that the cheap black pots might get too hot, and people are suggesting putting them in something else, which just adds to the cost. Is there a way to avoid using so many pots? Should I consider getting a large box or something similar instead? I only have access to a balcony for my plants.

I'm not sure what specific veggies you're growing or why they'd overheat, but I'm in zone 10 and I’ve had great luck with black fabric pots from Amazon—they're super affordable and last a long time. If you already have some of those black plastic pots, I'd suggest giving them a shot before buying anything else. As long as you keep them watered, they should be fine. If the heat becomes an issue, maybe consider setting up some shade instead of switching pots altogether!
To combat the heat of black pots, you can try covering them with a lighter fabric. Just tie a piece around the pot, and it should help keep things cooler. Also, spray painting the outside of plastic pots white could be an option, but make sure to use paint that’s safe for plastics!
I live in Zone 7a/b (Tennessee), and I've used black pots (both fabric and plastic) for my container veggies with no issues. I keep my plants well-watered—about 10-15 minutes each day at sunrise and sunset with a timed sprinkler—to help them stay cool. It's made a big difference for me!
