Hey everyone! I'm just getting into woodworking and I'm looking for some advice on where to buy the right timber here in the UK. I'm planning some simple projects like shelves and a coat rack, but when I visited my local B&Q, I was really overwhelmed by the variety of materials available. I know I need to look for quality wood that isn't bowed, but I'm a total beginner and could use some guidance. Any tips on what type of timber I should be looking for and where to find it? Thanks! ?

Just hit up Google and search for "lumberyard + your location". There are plenty of options you can find locally. Trying specific lumberyards is often better than the generic stores as you can get more quality timber there. Plus, you might be able to find exactly what you're looking for without dealing with a lot of subpar options.
I'm not an expert on UK timber options since I'm based in the states, but I’d say it depends on your projects. Over here, big box stores often sell bowed lumber, which isn’t ideal for woodworking. My advice? Reach out to local woodworking groups or clubs; they can point you toward the best local suppliers. The woodworking community is friendly and helpful, so don't hesitate to ask around! Good luck with your projects!
Honestly, I'd say avoid B&Q if you can. As a beginner, you’re better off looking for planed all round (PAR) timber, especially if you don't have the tools to plane it yourself. Local builders' merchants typically provide better options for internal joinery, and they're not much more expensive than the big box stores. My go-to is a builders' yard nearby where I can find lots of good PAR redwood. It's perfect for beginner projects while you sharpen your skills. And if you need plywood or other sheet goods, that's the place to go! If you're considering higher-end hardwoods later, just ensure they have pre-planed options and check the specifics based on where you are in the UK.

Thanks for the suggestion! I think I'll check out some local lumber yards as I really want to get started on the right foot. ?
