Best Places to Find Thin Walnut and Maple for Coasters?

Asked By CraftyNinja42 On

I'm new to woodworking and looking to create some coasters for friends. I need relatively thin pieces of maple (around 1/4") and walnut (about 1/2"). Can anyone suggest where I might find these without spending a fortune? Also, I'm curious about the potential costs per linear foot for such wood.

When you're looking for thin wood, you should keep in mind that it's usually sold by board feet rather than linear feet. Check out places like Rockler or Woodcraft; they might have what you need. You could also visit your local lumberyard, but they might not carry pieces that thin. Definitely worth a look on YouTube for a quick guide on board feet—it'll help!

Thanks for the tip! I'll give those stores a try and see what they have.

Home Depot actually sells thinner boards for coasters. They're convenient to use but can be pricier by board foot. Just keep in mind that since you’re starting out, these might do the trick just fine!

I found some options online too, but worried about the quality. Have you tried those?

That's good to know! I’ll check their prices today.

It can be tough to find wood that thin without milling it down yourself. If you get a thicker piece, planing it might generate a lot of waste, so that's something to consider. If you really get into woodworking, investing in some tools to do it yourself could save you in the long run!

Yeah, I'm limited on tools and space at the moment, so I'll start with what's available.
