Best Plants for a Sunny Balcony That Gets Cold at Night?

I have a south-facing balcony that gets plenty of sunlight during the day, but at night it can get pretty chilly—down to around 10 degrees Celsius—since I live in Germany. I'm looking for advice on what plants would thrive in this environment. Any suggestions?

I recommend planting herbs like basil or thyme. You can also train some houseplants like snake plants and spider plants to enjoy the outdoors for the summer. They’re hardy and can stand a little temperature drop at night.

You could also try adding a fern! They can be really nice for greenery and do okay in partial shade if the sun gets too intense.

If you want some vibrant colors, marigolds, geraniums, petunias, and lobelia are great choices for sunny spots! They can really brighten up your balcony and handle those warm days well.

Consider adding snake plants, zonal geraniums, and tradescantia Pallida. Some palm varieties can manage those temperature changes too, although I'm not sure which ones are best. Just make sure to keep an eye on them during those chilly nights!

Last summer, my balcony looked amazing with begonias, petunias, geraniums, and even some tomatoes! Just a heads up, you'll need to water them daily when it gets hot. I only keep my plants out from May to September here in Canada, but they do fantastic in the sun!
