I'm renting a place surrounded by conifer trees and want to start a garden, but I'm not sure what plants thrive in the shade and possible acidic soil. I'm in Quebec, Canada, so I'm looking for ideas that would work here.

There's a common myth that the soil under evergreens is acidic, but that's not true! They really take up a lot of water, which makes it tough for other plants. I suggest using mulch around the base, and you might consider some raised pots for planting annuals. Native plants like cacti can sometimes grow near conifers, but everything else may struggle. Maybe adding some garden art could make the area more visually appealing!

That makes sense! I have quite a few conifers and have cut them back to help my lawn. The moisture from snow and nearby streams does help, though.
