Best Plants for Shady Garden Areas

Hey everyone! I'm planning to create gardens on either side of my front porch this year. I've got one side figured out, but the other side is tricky because it's pretty much in deep shade from a large oak tree. There's no grass, just moss, and I'm wondering what kind of plants might actually thrive there. I was thinking ferns might be the only option, but I'm open to suggestions! I'm in zone 7a. Thanks for any advice!

Don’t forget about cardinal flowers, blue lobelia, and spring bloomers like Virginia bluebells. Coral bells (heuchera) come in various colors and can really brighten up a shady area! I also love planting caladiums; just remember to overwinter those bulbs.

You have a lot of good options! Hostas, Bleeding Hearts, and Astilbe are great choices for shady spots. I've also had success with Autumn Ferns. Just double-check your zones, especially since I’m in Canada and it can make a difference!

If you’re looking for something edible, consider lettuce. Mint grows super easily but keep it in a container or it’ll take over the place. Also, your local greenhouse can provide tailored recommendations for your area, so it might be worth a visit!
