Hey everyone! I just bought my first house, and the current chain link fence is great for keeping the dogs safe and keeping the critters out. But we're not thrilled with our privacy since both neighbors have raised decks for their pools. I'm thinking about planting some shrubs or bushes along the fence line for a bit more privacy. I live in Connecticut and we're approaching fall/winter, so I'm wondering if it's better to wait until spring for planting to help the plants establish their roots. The Mrs. isn't a fan of arborvitaes and prefers a more boxy look instead. I'm curious to hear what others have done, what height you normally plant at, and how long did it take for the plants to grow to about 5-6 feet? Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you’ve got a good plan! Just make sure you know how high and wide you want them, plus consider the sunlight they’ll be getting. If you’re looking for a formal hedge style, think about how much room you have for them to grow! Have you thought about using privacy fencing instead?
You might want to check out Steeds Holly (Ilex crenata 'Steeds'). They need full sun to thrive and are a bit narrow, which would help with that boxy look your Mrs. prefers. You might find that they're a bit hardier for your area too!
Privets could be a great option for you! They grow pretty quickly and can give you the height you need for privacy. Just make sure they're suited for your hardiness zone. They're popular in the northeast, so you might have success with them!
That’s cool! Do you have any experience with how fast they actually establish? I’ve heard mixed reviews about them.

We want a full sun area and about 140 feet in length to cover. Just trying to balance budget and aesthetics since we already have a chain link fence!
