Best Sander for Refinishing Solid Wood Doors

I'm looking to refinish some old solid wood doors in my home. The first step is to strip the existing paint, which might contain lead. After that, I'll be sanding the doors and repainting one side white while applying a dark stain on the hallway side. I've got an orbital sander, but I'm wondering if a sheet sander would work better for this project or for stripping furniture and molding in general. Any advice?

If you're dealing with lead paint, it's best to avoid using a sander until it's confirmed lead-free. For sanding down the doors, a random orbital sander is generally a great choice since it reduces scratches and works well with both directions of the wood grain. However, I'd recommend starting with a chemical stripper to safely remove the paint without dispersing lead particles into the air. And don't forget to wear a proper respirator for safety! Honestly, complex shapes like doors might require a few different sanding tools. I suggest using a combination of sheet, belt, and orbital sanders, along with some scraping tools. If you suspect lead paint, definitely start with a chemical stripper to keep it safe. Keep in mind that staining old painted doors can lead to unsatisfactory results, so consider using oil or varnish for a nicer finish on the natural side.

Thanks for the tips! I really appreciate the heads-up about the lead paint and the finish options.
