Best Sandpaper for Removing Old Finish from Wood Furniture?

Asked By WoodHustler101 On

I'm working on refinishing some wood furniture and I started with 80 grit sandpaper using an orbital sander. However, I've noticed that I'm only managing to remove the finish effectively when I tilt the sander and apply more pressure, which feels wrong. Should I switch to a lower grit, like 40, to get better results? Also, any tips for achieving a smoother finish with the orbital sander would be greatly appreciated!

If you're set on sanding, you might want to consider starting with 40 grit to really tackle that old finish. But keep in mind, hand scraping can be a great option too. It's quicker and less stressful on your hands. Just be careful if your furniture isn't solid wood—it could be veneer! So watch out for that!
