I need to repair a hole in my bathroom ceiling above the bathtub due to a leak. What type of sheet rock should I use for this area? Also, should I waterproof the ceiling where I'm installing the sheet rock?

Consider using specialized sheetrock designed for damp areas. They have options like green board and blue board which resist mold, and there are some newer materials that use fiberglass instead of paper for water resistance.
You generally don't need to waterproof the ceiling unless it's a steam room situation. Green board works great here, or you could even use cement board if there's any leftover from another project. That's a solid option too!
For a ceiling above the bathtub, you're usually fine using regular sheet rock since it shouldn't be directly exposed to water. However, it's smart to go with something moisture-resistant like green board, especially considering the condensation from hot showers. Also, make sure you use a paint that's rated for bathrooms to protect it further.
Thanks for the tip! I was a bit worried about condensation. I do have a dehumidifier and a vent in the bathroom, so I should be okay with regular sheet rock then?
Even with a dehumidifier, I'd still recommend green board to be on the safe side.

Thanks for confirming that!
